Racist Cupcakes
As an activist blogger occasionally turned food blogger, I felt that this video was appropriate: food and racism all in one video. I mean, who knew that cupcakes could be racist? I didn’t. But truly, it’s not just me, these ones are. Take a look at the video:
The sites that I’ve found this on have been full of comments like “Don’t be so sensitive, it’s not meant to look like black people, it’s just ’cause the icing is chocolate!” Please. Let’s be real, the black glaze along with the overly large pink lips? The cupcakes are African-American (never thought I would say a sentence like that!).
Interestingly, the commercial also makes a comment on stereotypes about white people not being as musically inclined as black people (while enforcing the view of black people as most talented in areas of entertainment). When the unglazed, “white” cupcake starts to sing, it is off key. It’s not until that cupcake gets glazed and becomes “black” that they all sing with it.
Duncan Hines received a ton of flack for this commercial, rightfully so. But honestly, my question is: why on EARTH would you make it in the first place? I mean, what audience are you targeting anyways?
