Rape Convictions

Here’s a sad statistic for you: out of every 100 rapists that exist in the U.S., 97 are walking free right now. Yes, only 3% of rapists are imprisoned for their crimes. You might assume that this is because victims are not reporting their rapists, however, according to this RAINN article, the number of reports has increased slightly over the years, while the percentage of rapists that go to prison has decreased.

This is a staggering statistic not only because it means that rapists are not being punished, but because, as the article points out, rape is often a repeat crime, meaning that these people are likely to rape again.

From my experience, the police do not give a damn about women and their minds and bodies and that is why many rapes go unreported/uninvestigated. When I was 16, I was raped at a party and reported it six months later out of shame. The investigation was turned onto me, and I was accused of trying to sabotage a man’s life because “he never called me back”. There was never an arrest, because there was no physical evidence. I heard that a few months after I reported the rape to the police, that my rapist was continuing to have sex with underage girls. I did nothing because I believed that it was my fault that I was raped because I put myself in a situation where I was vulnerable. I was tipsy and I was wearing a dress. People, if you have experienced something similar, DO NOT BE ASHAMED BECAUSE IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT. It doesn’t matter what you wore, or how much you drank. That person who hurt you, should know NOT to rape. Report it as soon as it happens and get your body examined by a doctor.

Wow Tina, I had no idea. You never told me that story. That’s awful, the things that the police say to women, and the lack of response in defense of women is disgusting.
