What it Means to be “Black in Latin America”
In this NPR piece, historian Henry Louis Gates Jr. talks about the history of slavery in Latin America, in comparison to that in the United States. He points out that contrary to the very US-centric way we Americans are taught in school, Latin America had far more slaves than the United States, and a slave trade that lasted much longer. I found this interview very interesting, especially since I get to watch the results of this history every day here in Rio.
